BlueDevil I agree, the lines are better than the (days/)tiles because lines represent the text in a journal - the main functionality of Diarium. It's better to avoid making it look too much like a "Calendar" app because that's not what it is.

I will ask my designer to create a concept with lines instead of days/tiles and will post it here in a few days.

So I got these two logos with lines instead of the squares. Personally, I don't like them too much. What do you think?

I don't like the one with the squiggly lines. It doesn't seem like it fits.

The one with the straight lines is acceptable, if a little bland. Not sure why, but the squares did look better visually, even if they made less sense. I wonder if B with lines would look good or if it would also look bland.

If there's no other way to make it look interesting with the lines, the best options might either be to simply go with the squares instead of the lines or do a design like F that doesn't require either

To be honest, I don't consider B or F any more as B is too abstract and the top is too hard to identify as a pen and F would be a too radical change from the current logo (and it also doesn't play well with a blue background).

Below a bunch of different combinations of frame and content. I left out the combinations of gradient frame with solid content or vice-versa.
The more options there are, the harder it is to decide 🙈

Of those, I like top left, middle right, and bottom right the best.

I think the squares look best with no gradient, but a gradient might work with the lines (maybe because lines are otherwise less interesting).

And I think the lines that go all the way to the quill (rightmost) look better than the ones that randomly stop in the middle

I don't think of a journal as a calendar, but as a notebook, so the calendar emphasis is not resonating for me. Having said that, of all the icons i like C the best, but none truly stand out, to be honest.

What if it was just four white lines with the quill of C; simple, succinct, not busy and not too similar to your current logo while still being recognizable.

Maybe the style close to win11 is a better choice. You can resident in the taskbar icon.

DanielLewis I don't quite understand. Diarium does not have a taskbar icon.
Diarium is available on 4 different platforms, not only Windows, so I want to avoid a "platform-specific" style

I am a writer and an occasional calligrapher. I am addicted to fountain pens. And I like simplicity. Logo C offers a nod to all of these.

I like the ones with more color! Adds depth and so they easily catch the eye.

I suggest staying with the current app logo. None are compelling for me. I'll just get used to a different one if it changes, since none have inherent meaning to me. Thus it is better to stick with what is already familiar to me.

I voted in the Twitter poll, but I will say here that I think the feather being separated by blank space (as in the non-gradient designs) looks more modern than being separated by a gradient

Just wanted to say thanks for the great app. Works perfectly on my phone and desktop. Use it everyday. I think the current logo is fine, but what you might want to consider is changing the name.

It sounds too much like diarrhea. Die-uh-ree-um. Not sure if that's how you pronounce it, or if it's spoken like die-arr-ium. Guess you didn't catch that since your native language I'm assuming is German. And no one was probably brave enough to tell you, don't mean any offense. Just my zwei pfennig.

JohnC Happy you like the app? So you think the current logo is better than all the alternatives I presented here?

I have had many people telling me how the app name sounds in English. Diarium means "diary" in Latin and it was selected as app name just like I am trying to find a new app logo here: users were able to suggest a new name and then vote on them: Diarium was the winner. So what alternative app name would you suggest? I haven't come across a good alternative yet.

timo I like E for the design. It evolves from the current design with a hint of colour to make it more prominent on the screen
