Ah, I see the issue with different prices. How about $19.99 per app, of any format? That’s still very reasonable for a one-time fee, especially compared to Day One costs year over year! And the fact that it’s truly private — you keep your own data — is major.
I would imagine most people only usually need 2 formats: One for desktop, and one for mobile, correct?
It would also be helpful to offer a full month of the trial version, so people can get used to it and actually use it — as often, one might download something and not get around to using it for several days. Get them hooked on using it. 🙂
(Additionally, if you could offer a much less-compressed photo option - much less compressed than your “less compressed” option is now - then many people will be more receptive to using it as a photo journal. 😉 You can warn them it will cause slower syncing etc..)
I’ve been involved in marketing for years – I do think advertising would be helpful, but need to think about the best way, as yes, it can be expensive. I definitely would suggest offering it to reviewers, like on Apple app forums, for review. Tell them all the features. I first heard of it on Reddit.
