Has Anyone Imported/Migrated from DavidRM's Journal?

Hi,

I have been using DavidRM's journalling software "The Journal" since 2013, daily, so I have quite a sizeable journal now. I like that software, but the one thing I really wish is that I could access it from my phone. I doubt I would actually write entries from my phone, but it happens so often that I'm out with friends and someone says, "What was the name of that Thai restaurant we went to in October?" and I think.... if only I could access & search my journal on my phone, I would know!

So, in looking for a journal software which I would be able to access on my phone, I came across Diarium. However, I'm not willing to start from scratch and have to search in two places, so a key in my decision will be whether I can move my entries over, and how difficult this is. The DavidRM Journal does support all kinds of different text format exports, so it seems likely I would be able to get my entries into a format that Diarium could handle. If someone else has done it and I don't have to figure out the process on my own, that would be very helpful, though.

JPPottle Hi, right now I'm not aware of any software that can covert any of The Journal's export formats into one Diarium can understand.

That being said, I am interested in writing software to fix that. I downloaded a copy of The Journal, and there's an ATOM XML export option I can work with as long as it's not encrypted or password protected (the encrypted image files embed in the XML file I can deal with).

There are 2 other people I'm currently writing software for right now though, so you are 3rd in the queue.

I'll update you on progress.

I am very interested in this also. My journal dates back to 1992. TBH, I am shocked that DAVIDRM is not in the cloud yet. Many loyal uses are leaving for this very reason.

Hi. I have the same issue - many decades of entries in DavidRM”s journal. I’ve always hated the fact that he never created an IOS version, so I kept all my entries in windows in a desktop computer. I recently discovered Diarium and am in love! I use it every day now. But I wanted a full history in one program. So I would have loved a migration path, but I recently just decided to literally go through and cut and paste every single Journal entry into Diarium. It took many hours, but it is worth it!

I originally used TheJournal, then switched to Rednotebook, then back to TheJournal because I wanted to add photos to entries and the photo handling in Rednotebook was terrible. Finally copied and pasted 10 years of entries into Diarium as well as hand typing in diaries from when I was a teenager. It took ages, but was worth it because I could go back over old entries and add photos from my archive bringing a whole new life to my past entries.

I get the cut and paste, But giving the technology we use, there has to be a method to move these entries. There has to be a good programmer or script writer who can do this!

Hi JPPottle, I still want to do it. Unfortunately life took a turn I was not expecting, and I'm still trying to sort out the resulting mess.

i couldnt find it in the app store i was curious ~ so i Googled is this it? http://www.davidrm.com/ does it even work on a phone? following.

Nope. DavidRM journal was/is written on format that can't integrate into Apple devices. I wish I had known that before I spent years creating a journal with it.

I used "The Journal" for years so it would be nice to be able to integrate those entries into Diarium. However, I had more or less given up on the idea until I read this so here's hoping. . However, I am not motivated enough to copy & paste every entry into Diarium as they go back years. 😄

I have also been using The Journal for decades and would really appreciate a way to easily import into Diarium. I have started manually inputting and realize it will be a very long process. Otherwise, Diarium is excellent!

I have been working on this same issue for years myself. I have kept a daily journal on the DavidRM journal for 16 years. If someone comes up with a workaround i would love to know!!

I have used The Journal for years, copied logs from older software. But really want to have my log on birth platforms, so Instsrted copying each days journal over to Day One. When I found Diarium I exported all my Day one entries into it. The transfer was not perfect but got most of the journals over. I have been copying over the remaining days for the last month.

i currently have over 7000 days logged. The amazing thing is that this database only takes up 24MB. The Journal takes up 150 MB. Day One takes up 1.7 GB. this is significant as my Dropbox is only 2GB.

Hi @RobertSpencer ! How's your life? Any less busy these days? I would still love a way to import my DavidRM journal to Diarium, and it looks like there are quite a few other people are interested as well. I hope one day you will get to this.

I am begging you - please - I have been using DavidRM for 13 years. I am not about to transfer each entry one by one into here. PLEASE PLEASE help 🙂
