  • Why no standard keyboard shortcuts like CMD/CTRL+N for new entry?

After years of looking for an intuitive replacement for the ever-more-convoluted Day One, I discovered Diarium last week, and it seems to be perfect — full rich text even! — except for one missing feature that is standard across pretty much every other app on the planet since about 1984: Keyboard shortcuts for New, Open, Close, etc.

Am I missing something?

If not, is there a reason there's no CMD+N, CMD+O, CMD+W, etc. in Diarium?

I don't mean for this to sound critical — it's otherwise a great app — but I'm utterly perplexed why something as standard as CMD+N isn't available in this app, in the same way I'd be perplexed by a 2023-model car with hand cranks to open and close the windows.

I guess you can consider this a feature request.

Diarium version: 2.9.76
OS + version: macOS 12.6.e
Device model: M1 MacBook Air

Diarium is not a file-based program like "pretty much every other app on the planet since about 1984". 😃
When you use Microsoft Word and want to create a new entry: sure, just open a blank page.
But on Diarium, you would also have to specify a date for which a new entry should be created. So what exactly should happen when you press that shortcut? What exactly should happen when you press the "open" shortcut? What entry exactly should the app open? The app can't read your mind 🙂

I don't implement features before I see the need for them and I personally don't use shortcuts to create or close documents. I wait for feature requests like yours and enough other users supporting it. Is there a reason you create a new discussion and not supported the existing shortcut-related feature request here or here or here? Duplicate entries do not help me organize and prioritize feature requests.

timo Sorry for the duplication. I did see those threads, but they're rather old, so I wasn't sure jumping in there would get me anywhere. 🙂 Probably should have tried that first.

    To answer your questions:

    • CMD+N should create a new entry today — the idea being you'd be making entries throughout the day, so that's the default behavior. (I've tried about dozen diary apps — Day One, Diarly, etc. — and this is the only one that doesn't do this, as far as I recall.)
    • CMD+O was just more of an example of standard keyboard shortcuts, not so much a request for this app
    • CMD+W should close whatever window is in the foreground (I discovered this default keystroke didn't work when trying to close the Settings, and discovered there wasn't any way to do that without taking my hands off the keyboard

I'm happy to reply in those threads if you'd prefer. 🙂

BTW, one of the reasons this is a priority for me is that (unless I'm missing something) adding a new entry for today is a multi-step process:

    • Click +
    • Click New Entry

This quickly becomes dozens of (what should be) unnecessary steps when making multiple entries a day, as I do.

Would it be possible to add your suggestions to one of the existing feedback threads I linked above? It is really a bit difficult for me to manage multiple discussions, that are about the same feature request - thanks.
