Diurium won't "close".

Diurium works fine, opens ok and syncs ok but won't close when try to close app. Have to resort to "force quit".
Love the app anyway, hope you can help. It seems to have started as I have just upgraded to the latest version of Ventura. But when I hit quit, Diurium just sits there on my desk top.

All appears fine on iOS.

So this happens on macOS, not on Windows, right?
Has the sync completed successfully when you try to quit the app?
Does the problem happen every single time you try to quit the app?
What sync option have you selected?
What happens when you click the sync button manually? How long does the sync take to finish?

Hi Timo, it doesn't synch from my MacBook to my iOS devices.. two iPads and my iPhone, I don't get the locally updated message, and the sync circle doesn't have the cross to show a sync is available. I always usually hit the sync button manually after every entry.
However there is no problem syncing from an iOS device. If I have to force close the MacBook version because the "Quit Diurium" button is greyed out after its failed to close, nothing is synced, until I open and launch my iOS devices diurium... then immediately I get a message "local databases synced". So it does sync somehow just not directly from my MacBook.
I'm certain this began with the latest round of Apple updates... including the latest version of Ventura. But it doesn't seem to affect iOS. I can make an entry on an iPad and sync no problem... including to the Mac OS.

I don't have any windows devices, I've been an Apple guy for maybe thirty years. I am getting on a bit. I was a Chief Electrical Engineering Officer in the Navy. So in a senior position I was able to ensure there was always an Apple device on board for my use.

I was also the first Electrical officer who sailed on a ship with computerised monitoring systems on board in Europe!!!!
It was a big IBM machine with a keyboard for entering commands, and the computer itself was a big roll of punch hole tape which flew backwards and forwards. I had a lot of problems in the tropics, if the humidity got too high the tape (paper) would weaken in the moisture and break. And it was hell trying to load a new tape and set it up.
Remember I would be alone in the middle of the Pacific maybe, so there was no tech support to call!

I have a claim to fame though, When I was very young a long time ago now I went on the hippy trail to India, onto Katmandu and into Afghanistan, but when I was in India I stayed in a hostel with STEVE JOBS!!! He was there with a friend I think was called Frank, Steve went everywhere barefoot, most of us wore flip flops, but Steve and I had quite a few discussions about spirituality and Buddhism in general, we even discussed becoming monks! We also sat and smoked hash together.

Steve did mention electronics a few times, but I wasn't really interested. When we parted ways he gave me his address and phone number and invited me out to stay in the States! I think that was a life changing opportunity missed!!! Hahahaha... I could have become an early Apple employee!!! And I think I'd be sitting in a very different apartment to the one I'm in now.

So the underlying problem is the sync not working. The app not closing is resulting from that (as the app is only "allowed" to close once the sync completes").
You added a lot of information, unfortunately not all that I asked for 😃 So I try again: What sync option have you selected?
Did you also try restarting macOS completely? Does the problem persist after doing that?

timo Hi Timo, The only sync option I have always used is the sync icon, which has the line across it to show info is available to sync, I have always hit that one and I get the message all local databases updated. Thats the one I've tried, unfortunately it doesn't sync and when I go to "Diurium" - "Quit Diurium" it doesn't close the app but the quit option remains greyed out. So then my only option has been "force quit"... However this doesn't lose any info and when I open Diurium on an iOS device it immediately tells me "local databases updated" and all my entries are then available.
So the fault been unable to Quit in Mac OS Ventura does not result in any data loss.

I have restarted all my devices to no avail. I'm inclined to think Apple might slide a small update in there (as they do) if this problem is affecting any other Apps? Which I haven't come across but may be out there. I did chat on the Apple support community and search it but could find no other references to my situation.

Have you received any similar feedback from the Diurium family?

It may be something at my end, although after all these years I'm very savvy and careful with my OS and what I switch on and off.

So I tried "Move to iPad" and the entries went across ok. I came back to my MacBook and the entries were all there, but again it wouldn't quit. I don't know.... I've dived into my wifi on all devices, checked and double checked my settings and can't find anything to trigger this failure. I wasn't aware but now understand that Diurium must sync before closing.... which is why I checked all my wifi connections etc... but all seems fine and I also have iAWriter which also multi device syncs across the cloud and that works fine. Although I don't use it often as I have Scrivener for writing my published work.

I must say Timo I am very humbled by the speed and dedication you are and have shown to customer support. You are literally one in a million. If there is any way beyond the App Store I can spread the lovely truth of Diurium let me know and I'll be there like a shot!

Oddball With "sync option" I was referring to the Cloud service you selected when enabling the sync. So did you choose OneDrive or Google Drive, ...?
Has the sync worked in the past for you or did it never work?

It would be very good if you could record a small video showing the problem and send it to me via mail (diariumapp@outlook.com).

This is the first time I hear about this for Diarium, however one other user also reported a similar issue with the WorkingHours app.

Hi Timo. Diurium just worked with Apple iCloud from the get. go, no hick ups, perfect. I don't think I even selected iCloud it just did it! Which is partly when I fell in love with this amazing app.

However although it won't allow me to close the app as it thinks it hasn't synced it must have, because as soon as I open an iOS device it instantly updates my entries which my Mac OS device is showing as not synced.

I'll do a video as soon as I can, I have to travel for a few days now but I'll sort it as soon as I return. Thanks so much for your time.

I think I found the underlying problem.
When syncing, Diarium tries to get the current internet / NTP time. On some PCs or in some networks, this request might not be answered by the time server or there is another problem when trying to get this timestamp. In this case, the sync stalls and won't finish, because a timeout isn't correctly canceling the operation. I will fix this in the next app update.

Even after manual sync, the "Quit" option is dimmed in Mac Ventura 13.2
So I suppose I will "force app to quit" until the next upgrade!
