The tag area can be quite large, depending on how many tags you add. Some users add 30+ tags per entry - that amount would not fit in the top right corner.
While some of the bottom buttons could be shrunk down (there is a different feature request for this here in the forums), the same is not possible for the rating and the location buttons - they should always be shown, not only in the editing mode.
I also know that some users prefer how large the buttons are and that they are labeled. When there is enough text, images and tags, the buttons will also be pushed down, out of the viewport, and shouldn't bother much.
I had the swipe gesture implemented in a previous version of the app, but decided to remove it again because it did lead to accidental swipes. Additionally, there already is a "swipe back" gesture on Android and iOS to go back to the last screen. Users would become frustrated if they try to do one thing, but the other thing happens
